Are you worried about your waist line?

It seems like many people are thinking about theirs. Type “belly fat” into google and you get 130 million results indicating that you are not alone.

Visceral fat, the kind you find around your organs, is active and can have a serious effect on our health. According to Harvard Health excess abdominal fat, changes the normal balance and functioning of hormones. The good news is that visceral fat also responds to exercise and a healthy diet.

Exercise is very effective at reducing belly fat.

That is good news.

Many chronic diseases are linked with belly fat, but exercise helps and new research published in the American Journal of Neurology found that “obesity, especially around the middle, was associated with lower grey matter brain volumes.”

This study on 9,000 adults proves obesity, especially abdominal obesity, is linked with having a smaller brain volume in adults over 55.

The grey matter was reduced in the participants with high BMIs and waist to hip ratios. Grey matter is made up of the brain’s nerve cells. It includes areas of the brain responsible for self-control, muscle control and sensory perception.

Reducing your Risk

You don’t have to google belly fat to reduce your risk.

Eat more vegetables, exercise regularly and eat fewer empty calories from processed foods. Fruits, such as berries, and green leafy vegetables are good brain food and reduce your risk of cognitive decline.

A junk food diet changes your brain.

Exercise can help you reduce abdominal fat.

Strength training is a great way to increase muscle mass and decrease fat stores. You don’t even have to use fancy equipment or do a million ab exercises. Simple exercises like squats, push-ups, planks are all effective for reducing body fat.

Don’t worry about your waistline, eat right and exercise to see a difference.
