Eat more pasta.

Every decade there is a new low carb diet. Atkins, Zone, Dukan, South Beach and now the Low Carb High Fat Diet (LCHF) Diet. They are all basically the same, cut the carbs and by magic you will lose fat.

If you eat less. The only way to lose weight is to eat fewer calories.

A new study from Italy published in the journal Nutrition and Diabetes studied 23,000 people and found that people who ate pasta as part of their diet and you know, in moderation, had lower rates of obesity and abdominal fat. The researchers emphasized that the Mediterranean Diet is one of the healthiest and pasta is an integral part of the Mediterranean Diet.

Another study presented at the International Conference on Obesity in Vancouver in May shows that the low carb/high fat diet actually causes the opposite of what the proponents believe. The LCHF diet folks think that carbs release insulin and high insulin levels drive fat into fat cells. Meaning that if you reduce carbs to 20% of your diet and increase fat intake, as much as 80%, but keep the calories the same, you should lose weight. This would happen because as you decrease carbs you would decrease insulin and fat would be released from fat cells and you would lose weight. Magic. Really it would be.

What really happens when you decrease carbs and increase the fat in your diet? People in a very controlled environment had less fat loss on a low carb/high fat diet. The fat loss slowed down when eating a high fat diet, but they lost much more muscle on the high fat diet. Not usually what people are trying to do when they want to lose weight. Usually they really want to lose their body fat, not their muscle tissue.

My conclusion from these two studies, eat pasta, not too much and mostly with vegetables.

Change your mind, change your health,
