Ready. Set. Run.

Running is a miracle cure for almost everything.

Runners live about 3 years longer than non-runners. Running counteracts the effects of eating badly, drinking and being overweight. It isn’t actually a miracle cure, but it outperforms walking, cycling, and swimming when it comes to chronic disease prevention and longevity.

You don’t even have to go fast, or for that long. Every hour of running extends your life by 7 hours up to the 3-year maximum.

But wait, there are more benefits!

Seem to good to be true? For an unlimited time, you can get these additional benefits from running.

Running protects your back from degenerative changes. Running strengthens the invertebral discs in your spine, something researchers didn’t think possible, until recently. There is more good news from this study, walking might be beneficial too. In fact, the only thing researchers advise against is sitting.

Running can also lower inflammation in your knees and can slow the progression of osteoarthritis. This study published in the European Journal of Applied Physiology comes to the conclusion that running is a type of medicine. Running is chondroprotective, it helps protects the joint by delaying degenerative changes in the knee joint.

Running builds stronger bones. Running for longer distances is directly related to bone density. More is better. The more you run the stronger your bones get.

But wait, if you run now you can get this additional bonus!

Running improves your memory.  Running stimulates a protein found in muscle to build new neurons in your brain. It is called exercise-induced neuron growth and can be directly traced from muscles to the brain. Running after learning improves memory. Studies show that running after studying new information can improve recall.

Still not convinced to run?

Running slows the aging process. Older adults that run spend the same amount of energy walking as a normal 20-year-old. Running improves fuel economy by improving oxygen consumption. When compared with older adults that walk for exercise, the runners walked better. In other words, the regular runners were “better walkers” than adults that walk for exercise.

Running for as little as 5-10 minutes a day, even at a slow speed, can improve life expectancy and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease by 45%.

It’s not too late to benefit from running and it’s contagious! When researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology tracked data of 1.1 million runners, who ran 359 million kilometers combined, they found that for every 10 minutes extra minutes of running motivated other runners to go another 3 minutes.
