5 Ways a Good Night’s Sleep Improves Your Health

Losing sleep can change your health. If you have a chronic condition it is even more important to make sleep a healthy habit. Here are five ways that lack of sleep can affect your health.

  1. Weight. Sleeping less than 6 hours a night increases weight gain even in children. People who sleep 8 hours a night have the lowest rates of body fat.
  2. Diabetes. Regularly getting a good night’s sleep improves blood sugar control reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes.
  3. Immune function. People who sleep 8 hours a night are more resistant to respiratory infections than those who get less than 7 hours of sleep. Sleep deprivation decreases your ability to resist infection.
  4. High Blood Pressure. Get 8 hours a night to reduce the risk of developing high blood pressure.
  5. Age faster. Lack of sleep changes metabolism and hormones similar to ageing. Sleep prevents premature ageing.

These are five ways that losing sleep changes your health. If you aren’t getting enough sleep start by adjusting your sleep routine. Being consistent with sleep habits, eating well, and exercising regularly can help boost your immunity and reduce the risk of diabetes or high blood pressure.

Make sure you stick to a regular night-time routine, go to bed and get up at the same time, start relaxing before bedtime and keep your bedroom dark and cool.
