I spent last weekend at the (virtual) American College of Lifestyle Medicine’s (ACLM) annual conference and one of the speakers asked the following question,
Why do we talk about chronic disease and not chronic health?
Dr. David Katz, past President ACLM
Good question
Would it make a difference?
I don’t know.
I do know that there are many people who know what they should do but still don’t do it. I know people who don’t understand why some habits are unhealthy. I even know people that don’t know what is a health-promoting habit and what is not.
But knowledge doesn’t change habits
At least it is not the only thing that changes habits. Knowing is only half the battle, we also need an emotional reason to change.
The fear of death or the joy of living?
Are you motivated to practice good health because you are afraid of the consequences or because you love feeling good?
It is easier to feel like we are getting something great, rather than avoiding something bad. Even if the results are the same.
What could you be giving up? High cholesterol, obesity, high blood pressure, heart disease, cancer, and so on.
What are you getting? More energy, less disease, fewer medications, less pain, improved immunity, better sleep, to name a few.
Do you practice chronic health habits?
How do you feel about your current health practices? According to research, only about 3% of American adults practice the four healthy habits that make a big difference.
