High-Quality Carbohydrates
In a new study that followed 47,000 women from 1984 – 2016, researchers at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University and Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health found that high-quality carbohydrates and fibre in midlife were linked to healthy ageing.
The researchers defined healthy aging as the absence of 11 major chronic diseases, lack of cognitive and physical function impairments, and having good mental health.
High-quality carbohydrates, such as whole grains, fruits, vegetables, beans and dietary fibre in midlife, were linked to up to a 37% improved chance of healthy ageing. Eating more high-quality carbohydrates was also associated with increased positive mental and physical health.
Qi Sun, associate professor in the departments of nutrition and epidemiology at Harvard Chan School, says,
“Our results are consistent with other evidence linking consumption of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and legumes with lower risks of chronic diseases, and now we see the association with physical and cognitive function outcomes.”
There is consensus when it comes to the healthiest diet for heart disease, cancer, diabetes, obesity, and many other chronic conditions. Eating more fibre, increasing fruit and vegetable consumption, and including beans in your diet have immediate and long-term benefits.
Now, we have proof that eating high-quality carbohydrates improves our health now and in the future. Are you eating enough carbohydrates?
