A study about the importance of your gut bacteria and how it can speed up ageing was published last week.
The study found that the bacteria in your gut alter the ageing process. What you eat may speed up or slow down ageing.
There is one key factor to slow down the ageing process.
Fibre
Fibre is the key to healthy guts and maintaining healthy intestinal cells that fight inflammation.
The study links the changes in cells to dietary intake and not due to ageing itself.
What are we eating?
Not enough fibre. Most people are fibre deficient.
Last week the American Heart Association said that 50% of the average American’s diet is from ultra-processed foods.
Researchers at the Center for Disease Control estimate that for every 5% increase in ultra-processed there is a corresponding decrease in heart health.
Ultra-processed foods have no fibre, but they do contain lots of fats, sugars, and artificial ingredients.
Good for your guts
Fibre is good for your guts, your heart, and your health. It is only found in plant-based, whole, unprocessed foods like legumes, vegetables and fruits.
To track your fibre intake download the Physician’s Committee for Responsible Medicine Fiber checklist to stay young at heart.
