It has been more difficult to maintain muscle this year. With the closure of gyms and many people confined to their homes for prolonged stretches, it can be harder to stay fit.
It is challenging, not impossible.
It is also very important.
New research from the sports scientists at Edith Cowen University in Australia emphasizes the importance of exercise and muscle is when it comes to reducing the risks of cancer.
Regardless of how much adipose tissue, or body fat, an individual with more muscle reduces their risk of death from cancer by more than 50%.

Screen time is sedentary time
Being at home more can increase the time spent in front of screens. This also results in being less active. It may also be interfering with the quality of your workout. New studies now link being sedentary as an independent risk factor for developing cancer. Being sedentary can increase the risk of cancer by 82%.
The amount of time a person spends sitting prior to a cancer diagnosis is predictive of time to cancer death.”Susan Gilchrist M.D., lead author and associate professor of Clinical Cancer Prevention at the University of Texas
It doesn’t take much to make a difference.
This study of more than 30,000 adults over 45 years old linked being sedentary to increased risk of disease, but a little activity made a big impact. 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise daily reduces the risk of death from cancer by 31%.

As we head into winter with uncertainty about what will happen it is important to remember that exercise keeps us healthier.
Stay active and don’t forget to do strengthening exercises, your muscles matter.
