The first, an analysis of almost 30,000 people followed in 6 studies, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association shows that increased egg and cholesterol intake increases the risk of cardiovascular disease.

The second study done by St. Michael’s University in Toronto has shown that soy protein reduces LDL cholesterol levels.

Soy protein is about to be removed from the Food & Drug Administrations (FDA) list of heart-healthy foods. This study from Toronto shows that soy protein reduces low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol by 4%. Dr. David Jenkins, the lead author, adds that replacing high cholesterol foods with soy protein would also increase the effect on blood cholesterol levels.

What about oil?

The last study was on cooking oil and reducing cholesterol levels. If you have heart disease the best way to repair the damage to blood vessels is to eliminate added fats and oils. However, if you are healthy and want to reduce your risk of developing heart disease then which oils are the best choice?

A new study by the German Institute of Human Nutrition analyzed a variety of cooking oils to understand the effect on blood lipid levels. They found that seed oils were the best for improving cholesterol levels. These included sunflower, safflower and flaxseed oil.

If you want to reduce your cholesterol levels to keep your blood vessels healthy, eliminate dietary cholesterol. This means eliminating animal fats, eggs, coconut oil and dairy products. Choose unprocessed soy protein sources in the form of edamame (soybeans) and tofu. When you use cooking oil use seed oils from organic sunflower, safflower and flaxseed.
