More evidence that plant-based diets are heart healthy.
A new study by the American Heart Association has confirmed that a plant-based diet is heart healthy. The researchers followed more than 15,000 adults over the age of 45, between 2003-2013. They looked at their dietary patterns and the likelihood of developing heart disease in people with no previous history of heart disease.
The people studied ate one of five diet types.
- Convenience Foods. This diet consisted mainly of red meats, pasta, fried potatoes, and fast food-type foods.
- Plant-based. This included dark, leafy vegetables, as well as whole grains, fruits and beans.
- Sweets. A diet that was mainly desserts, bread, chocolate, candy, and sweet breakfast foods.
- Southern. This diet was mainly eggs, fried foods, organ meats, processed meats, and sugar-rich, sweetened beverages.
- Alcohol/salads. People in this dietary pattern ate mostly salad dressings, green, leafy vegetables, tomatoes, butter, wine, and liquor.
Eating more plants is heart healthy.
The people eating a plant-based diet reduced their risk of developing heart disease by 42%. No other diet is associated with a decreased risk of heart disease or heart failure. You can significantly reduce your risk of heart disease with a plant-based diet.
