Three Recommendations

Three books, podcasts and two shows I recommend.

Books

The Reality Bubble. This is one of the best books I have read (well, actually listened to). The author Ziya Tong is entertaining, engaging and curious about out hidden world. She explores our collective blind spots that make it harder to see (or change) the future. If you are in Vancouver see Ziya on November 4th at the Vancouver Playhouse

21 Lessons for the 21st Century, by Yuval Noah Harari. I also listened to this one and recommend it. Reads like an instruction manual for the 21st century, exploring terrorism, fake news, immigration while contemplating how much more pressure we can collectively take. While it could be overwhelming and depressing it is not. Harari gives some thoughtful answers while looking toward the future.

Bolder, by Carl Honore. This books tackles ageism and invites us all to re-invent how we view and imagine our later years. An inspiring read for anyone contemplating their own future.

Podcasts

Rich Roll’s talk with Impossible Foods CEO and founder Pat Brown.

This may change your mind about faux meat products. There are many plant-based proponents who don’t want anyone to eat faux meat, because it isn’t as healthy as plants.

 Seriously, so what?

I want people to eat less meat. Meat is an environmental catastrophe. Oceans are being scraped of fish, animals are contained and killed in brutal conditions. Meat is not healthy.

Whether it is Impossible Foods or Beyond Meat, they are still way ahead of actual meat when it comes to health. This includes your health, the planet’s health and animal health. The founder of Impossible Foods talks a lot about making the faux meat feel and smell like meat. Which is one of the reasons I can’t eat it. It creeps me out. Especially the smell, so he is probably onto something because his market is meat eaters, not me.

Interested in why he is so committed to this big science experiment – listen and let me know if you think he is going to succeed.

David Epstein, talking about his book Range, which is on my list to read next, on Midtown Scholar Bookstore Author Reading Series. I loved David Epstein’s book The Sports Gene and Range is a book about later specialization and the willingness to experiment in life. This gives us a broader base of knowledge and allows us the ability to take seemingly unrelated concepts and use them to make decisions by exposing us to a wicked learning environments.

Outside’s podcast with Christopher McDougall’s latest running partner, Sherman. Sherman is a rescue donkey that has changed Christopher’s running plans. You might not know that I love donkeys and really would like my own. I am desperately searching for a donkey to run with if you have one available…

Watch

Finally, two shows I think you would enjoy.

The Game Changers

Available on Netflix. It may change your view of performance enhancement and recovery.  Watch it, let me know what you think. No spoilers here, it is inspiring, uplifting and makes you want to go out and train.

Reverse Your Body Clock are you ageing faster than you should? Our daily habits take a toll on our health and speed the rates of biological ageing. An interesting look at how our daily habits accelerate ageing and how to reverse it.
