With exercise, as with most things, timing is everything.
For instance, if you are using exercise to improve your memory, and there is plenty of research to support this, when you exercise matters. Learning something new and remembering it later, can be enhanced with good timing. Exercising immediately after, or not at all, gives you the same result. Not much retention.
However, researchers in the Netherlands conducted studies using recall tests and MRIs found that exercising 4 HOURS after exercise changed the brain’s hippocampus. The hippocampus is the area responsible for memory and learning. Participants had better recall 2 days after learning. Two days later they could remember many details that participants didn’t remember if they exercised immediately after learning, or if they didn’t exercise at all.
While the research couldn’t explain why the timing makes such a difference, you can still use the science to improve your total recall.
