Food Footprint
Do you want to know your environmental footprint from eating or not eating animal products? You can find out here.
Americans consume the most meat, followed by Australia, Brazil, Canada, and China. Your food choices matter—not just for your health but also for the health of the planet.
Americans consume 260 lbs of meat products per year. It takes 7 pounds of grain to produce 1 pound of beef, so it would be much more efficient to eat grains. Changing to grains over beef will indirectly benefit our health because 80% of all antibiotics used in the US are given to animals in food production. 30% of all land in the US is used for animal agriculture. You could argue that meat is the new smoking.
Even if you ate only 50% of your meals without any animal products, you could make a significant difference to the environment.
The Best Diet
We know that the best diet for our health, fitness, longevity, and disease prevention is a whole foods plant-based diet. There is not one diet for one condition and another to prevent another condition. The longest-lived and healthiest people all eat the same thing: a whole food, plant-based diet with no, or very limited, animal products.
Turns out, the best diet for our planet is the best diet for all of us and isn’t that great news? Everyone benefits from reducing our consumption of animals… including the animals.
