Many people worry that not sleeping before an event will have an effect on their performance. One night of tossing and turning is not going to affect your race, but a chronic lack of sleep does.
Results from a sleep restriction study on cyclists found that reducing sleep to 4 hours a night for three days had a significant effect on performance. Cyclists reduced their ability to burn calories by 4%, reduced aerobic power by 3% and their time to exhaustion decreased by 11%.
Being chronically sleep-deprived reduces the benefits you get from being fit as well as being a health risk.
For best results get a good night’s sleep.
