Is it fun?

Number 8 on the list of The Top 12 Worst Thing we do to our Health

Fun.

We aren’t having enough fun.

Are you doing the activities you think are fun? Do you get outside and go for a ride, run, hike, just for the joy of doing it?

I do think that some people use exercise as an atonement for other bad habits. Others think that it is something they should do – so they grit their teeth and do it.

Many people believe that exercise has to be hard, difficult, a suffer-fest or it won’t be beneficial.

Challenging yourself can be fun, but that doesn’t mean exercise always has to be a challenge.

You could go dancing.

When I heard this one I agreed and disagreed. I believe that if exercise isn’t fun it won’t become part of your lifestyle. That doesn’t mean every workout is fun, but generally, you enjoy it.

Sometimes the fun is in the challenge, the reward of reaching a goal, the company along the way, or all of the above.

I also think that the person who thought that we don’t have enough fun meant that we aren’t taking time to have unstructured playtime. Activities that are social and fun.

I agree with this too. You can just go for a run without measuring anything, distance, heart rate, calories burned. You can just enjoy it.

A couple of years ago we went to Cuba and one evening we were driving through a small town. The entire town seemed to be outside. Kids were chasing each other on bicycles, parents were walking and talking, there were kids playing games in the park. It felt like everyone was having unstructured and unsupervised fun. Have we forgotten how to do this?

Do you agree? Are you having enough fun?
