Longevity research is always looking for the most effective ways to live longer. However, living longer is not the only goal, living better for longer, might be more important. New research on protein and longevity has revealed some surprising news.
Protein is the hot topic at the moment and you can find it in everything and everywhere. You can find added protein in coffee, cookies, even popcorn and pop tarts. Seriously, pop tarts, maybe that is too much of a good thing?
Eat less.
Previous studies have shown that simply eating less is one way to improve longevity. Research on fasting and time restricted eating, eating within a certain time period, has shown that it can extend lifespan, improve weight loss and glucose regulation, lower blood pressure, and reduce inflammation.
But less of what?
A recent review of 350 published studies provides evidence that eating less protein can increase your lifespan. Other research has shown how reducing animal protein has health promoting benefits and now simply eating less protein can be beneficial for longevity.
Across the research, the reviewers found that eating less protein was associated with better metabolic function, less cellular damage, and better maintenance of healthy cells.
Dudley Lamming, one of the authors says
It’s absolutely crystal clear that there are benefits of protein to muscle growth and exercise response of active individuals, but because most people are relatively sedentary, many people are likely consuming more protein than they actually need, which probably has negative health consequences.
These studies show that the amount of protein sedentary people are eating today may have negative health consequences.
Protein’s building blocks.
Protein is made up of amino acids, and some including methionine, isoleucine, and valine appear to encourage unhealthy growth. This increases the risk of obesity, inflammation, and other age-related conditions.
More is more.
Protein is one of three macronutrients, along with fat and carbohydrates that we need daily. But, the targets for these should be based on individual’s needs, activity levels and age. Not what is popular or trendy. Sometimes less is more.
Change your mind, change your health,
