One habit that rules them all

When it comes to your immune system and your health there is one habit that rules them all.

We trade it, postpone it, try to do without it, brag about not needing it. All to our own detriment.

Once it is gone there is no getting it back. There is no storage system for sleep, it is a daily requirement.

For best health, nothing beats it.

There was a time when I would have said that sleep is part of the foundation of health. I have changed my mind. There is enough convincing research to show that without sleep, there is nothing else.

When it comes to your immune system sleep is important for keeping everything functioning optimally.

Three ways that sleep keeps your immune system strong

Sleep has been shown to boost the effectiveness of T cells, specialized immune cells. A good night’s sleep helps T cells recognize pathogens and fight back by attaching to invaders.

Chronic lack of sleep increases the inflammatory response resulting in a weakened immune system.

People who are chronically sleep-deprived are more likely to get respiratory infections, like the common cold. Sleep also helps our immune system remember pathogens to be able to protect us from viruses and bacteria.

Make sleep a health habit

It may take some time to change your sleep routine, but it is the most important health habit.

Tips for a good night’s sleep

Sleep in a cool, dark room.

Have a regular bedtime and wake time, even on the weekends.

Turn off screens two hours before bed.

Don’t have caffeine after 12:00 noon. Caffeine can be found in tea, coffee, chocolate, many carbonated and energy drinks. Don’t use alcohol or sedatives to get to sleep.

Exercise early in the day.

Sleep like your life depends on it.

Change your mind, change your health,

Shayla
