Exercise won’t help you lose weight.
I probably say those words every week. It is true and after so many years I can say with certainty that exercise will not help you lose weight, no matter how much you may wish it were true.
Exercise does some amazing things. Every day we find more reasons to exercise for our health. A new study published in December shows that exercise can be as effective as medications for reducing blood pressure, exercise is a supercharger for your brain, exercise reduces stress, it can help to treat depression and prevent cancer, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, the reasons to exercise are endless, but weight loss isn’t one of them.
Do you want to lose weight this year?
Then you really should be exercising.
What? Didn’t I just tell you it wouldn’t help. I did, but I left out one small detail. The next thing that I tell people right after “it won’t help you lose weight” is
Exercise will help you lose belly fat.
Besides making you stronger, increasing your muscle mass and improving cardiovascular fitness, exercise will reduce belly fat. A new study proved what I could have told you, exercise is very effective at improving your waistline.
Why does that matter?
Belly fat is deadly.
You may wish to get rid of it because you don’t like how you look, but it is unhealthy. Fat around your middle increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer, and dementia, but exercise will help you get rid of it. The researchers also reiterate something else I tell my clients,
Don’t just weigh yourself, also measure your waist circumference when you start an exercise program.
Resolutions
Resolutions to lose weight, or start an exercise program, aren’t limited to the New Year but this is a good time to recommit yourself to the benefits of being active.
I have set a few goals this year and one is to run 1000 KM in 2019. If I am consistent it should not be that hard. 20 KM a week for 50 weeks, which gives me two weeks off for unexpected interruptions. As long as I am consistent I should be able to do it, but I need to be dedicated about it.
If you want to join the 1000 KM challenge send me an email and I will send a tracking sheet.
