Three trends that make a difference

motivation is what gets you started

Some health and fitness fads come and go, and then get recycled and come back. Like the never-ending low-carb reincarnations. However, there are three popular health trends in 2022 that I hope will be adopted for long-term benefits.

Three trends that are worth your time.

Sleep.

Not that long ago sleep was considered a luxury and being too busy was something to celebrate. Not any more. Sleep is now considered essential. Without sleep, our health suffers. The impact of ongoing sleep deprivation has some serious health consequences, for your heart, your brain and your immune system. 7-9 hours a night is a health habit that will make a difference.

Microbiome.

The health of your gut makes a difference to your health. No, you don’t need supplements or superfoods, but you do need fibre which is only found in plants. Micronutrients are also in plants. Regardless of what you do this year eat your vegetables, all kinds and all colours. Keep your guts healthy. Oregon State University has found that melanoma patients undergoing immune therapy treatment have improved treatment response when they eat a high fibre diet

Activity.

Staying healthy also means being active. This is separate from exercise. You can’t exercise for 30 minutes every day and then sit for the rest of the day. Being sedentary changes your health. Schedule active breaks during your day, get up and get a glass of water. Take the stairs. Do a few chair squats between meetings. Whatever you do move more. Plus get some exercise. A new study from the University of California has shown that light activity increases the connection between parts of the brain that store memory. All it takes is 10 minutes to improve brain health.

Health and fitness sells. This is why there is always someone promoting the latest new thing. If one day you hear that x is the only thing you need, or the surprising news that doctors don’t want you to know (really doctors don’t want you to be healthier?) or that you only need 7 minutes of exercise, ask yourself. Does it sound too good to be true? Then it probably is.

Make these three trends part of your routine and stay healthy.
