Good news

One of the questions I am most commonly asked is, “Do you ever run out of ideas for the facts?”

No. There is always something new about fitness, health and nutrition. Sometimes they aren’t that interesting and normally in the summer the research slows down and I have to search a bit longer for something that may seem relevant.

Not this week.

I didn’t know what to choose, there was so much good news I thought I would share three of my favourites.

  1. Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), a program developed in the 1970s by Professor Jon Kabat-Zinn, at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, to help people with pain and untreatable medical conditions has been proven to assist with weight loss. 8 weeks of MBSR helped women reduce stress and blood sugar levels. An easy way to start the process of taking care of your own health. I have taken the MBSR course and read many of Jon Kabat-Zinn’s books and would recommend to anyone.
  2. Coffee helps you live longer! Drink one coffee a day and reduce your risk of death from heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes, and kidney disease by 12 percent! Drink 2-3 cups a day you reduce your risk by 18%! In a diverse group of more than 215,000 people, the research showed that coffee drinkers, decaf or regular, were less likely to be diagnosed with a number of chronic conditions.
  3. Cognitive performance, a fancy way of saying memory, recognition, attention, processing speed and verbal fluency is improved with cocoa flavonoids. The researchers state,

“Dark chocolate is a rich source of flavanols. So we always eat some dark chocolate. Every day.”

Dark chocolate and coffee are a great combination!

What a great week for health news.
